SITUATION:
In 1997, the gulf nation of Qatar (pronounced “Cutter”) decided to build a world-class university that incorporated the latest in smart classroom technology. Education City, as the university is called, will eventually comprise over 30 buildings on a single campus located in the capital city of Doha. To ensure a high level of excellence, however, many of the colleges will actually operate as satellite campuses of major universities in the United States. For example, Cornell Medical School signed-on to run the university’s Medical College. Many faculty from these universities will travel to Doha to teach, while others will remain in the states and conduct classes via video conferencing. This unique arrangement required designs for distance education systems that exceed those found on even the best U.S. campuses.
