Medical Communications and Security Systems Upgrade and Design Consultation for Children’s Hospital Expansion
In 2000, Children’s Medical Center began the execution of their 10-year growth plan. The plan included a 6-story bed tower expansion, 6-story tower, 12-story tower, 50k square feet of administrative office space, a new out-patient clinic, 9-story parking deck, expansion of existing parking deck, and numerous other additions and renovations.
Children’s brought EDI, Ltd. on as their medical communications, security, and audio-visual technology consultant. EDI planned and upgraded the existing security system for the hospital and integrated it with the new spaces. EDI was also responsible for security master planning and for the structured cabling design for all data/voice, nurse call, paging, telemetry, and security systems in the new areas. Access to computers is available to virtually all employees from administration to housekeeping.
EDI’s efforts in improving the connectivity of the staff, patients, and administration included.
- Enhancing the quality and reliability of the "wiring" that supports this functional connectivity
- Providing research on the latest trends, cost and value for wiring and connectivity approaches.
- Documenting enhanced standards for cabling and support facilities for future construction.
- Providing guidance and practical cost and design input for standards decisions relating to redundant and separated backbone (fiber) components and pathways.
- Designing several major projects using these new standards to upgrade the existing facility reliability.
- Working with vendors to develop practical ways for (formerly proprietary) network components of their systems to be integrated into the more reliable hospital network system.
Children’s has been recognized among the nation’s leaders in integrating technology into system management, patient care and information availability. The hospital was named one of “Health Care’s Most Wired” in 2003 by Hospital and Health Networks, the journal of the American Hospital Association.
